IN SONG
Gospel. Bluegrass. Traditional Samoan and Egyptian Music. Discover How Diverse Genres Inspired Today’s Great Opera Stars in ‘In Song’.
A high-school basketball star who discovered music through the Black church. A young man linked to a faraway homeland through Samoan song. A bluegrass and gospel-loving gal raised in a remote valley who went on to conquer the world's opera stages.
These are voices that define opera today. These are the voices of In Song, a new video series that shines a light on the musical origins of opera’s greatest performers.
Travel across the globe to meet stars on their home turf, as they perform music from the traditions that inspired them. The series starts on March 11, as the Grammy-nominated soloist J’Nai Bridges takes you on a trip back to her hometown to meet her "village" –– the family, elders, and members of her community who have guided her way.
This six-part series will also feature award-winning mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as she revisits her roots in the isolated hills of northwest Georgia; the Egyptian-born, New Zealand soprano Amina Edris, who shares the traditional Egyptian song that infused her childhood; and Samoan tenor Pene Pati accompanying himself on guitar and ukulele as he explores the world of Samoan and Maori music.
Series premieres March 11! Catch In Song for free on social media, YouTube, or on the San Francisco Opera website.
