SFOpera - K–12 Education Programs

Opera Guild Education Programs

Award-winning. Interactive. Immersive.

Sing with us

Self-expression. Confidence. Joy.

Imaginations are unleashed when professional singer-educators visit the classroom and awaken students’ creativity through highly participatory programs. Students engage with beloved classics and explore a panorama of colorful characters and inspiring stories.

Create with us

Commitment. Creativity. Collaboration.

Our inspiring 12-week residencies build self-confidence, helping students learn to compose, sing, act and produce. The Guild’s artists cultivate students’ understanding of literature or social issues relevant to the class, and guide them in expressing their interpretations through original songs and dialogue.

Perform with us

Teamwork. Responsibility. Inventiveness.

In this intensive, hands-on program, students develop skills as singers and actors as they rehearse and perform classic and contemporary operatic repertoire tailored to fit young voices. Students gain a deep understanding of opera and enjoy the rewarding experience of presenting an operatic work.

Come to the theater

Insightful. Engaging. Inspiring.

Bringing students to San Francisco Opera since 1939. San Francisco Opera Guild sponsored student matinees from 1939 to 1995, and since 1996 we have given students the opportunity to attend main stage final dress rehearsals. Over the years, these performances have been attended by hundreds of thousands of Bay Area students.

The Year of Compassion

Opera stories are human stories. With that in mind, the Opera Guild is launching something new this year—a key concept to inspire and shape our award-winning programming, and to celebrate the students, educators, artists and communities with whom we have forged such meaningful relationships. Through art we better understand others. We walk in their shoes, see differing points of view, gain broader cultural perspective and develop COMPASSION.

A red lotus symbolizes compassion in several cultures. Look for this symbol for the Compassion Connection in our programs.

This year we want compassion to be the fire behind our work with you, and have broken this concept down into key areas of consideration:

Where we find family: Ensembles on and off the stage

How we take care of ourselves and one another: Individual action and responsibility to community

Empathetic action: Connecting to those in need

Softening the bully: Building self-esteem and communication
