SFOpera - Education Programs

Education and Engagement

We believe that participation in the performing arts leads to deep appreciation of beauty and diverse points of view. Our programs help young people grow into curious and caring citizens with a strong sense of self and empathy for others.

The Year of Compassion

Through art we better understand others. We walk in their shoes, see differing points of view, gain broader cultural perspective and develop compassion.

Sing with us

Self-expression. Confidence. Joy.

Students engage with beloved classics of the repertoire, building confidence and self-expression while exploring a panorama of colorful characters and engaging stories.

Sing a Story is also available for libraries!

Create with us

Commitment. Creativity. Collaboration.

Inspiring 12-week residencies bring out the creative artist in all students, allowing them to engage with their curricula, communities and one another in meaningful ways. We can also hold residencies in high school classrooms.

Perform with us

Teamwork. Responsibility. Inventiveness.

In these intensive, hands-on programs, students develop skills as singers and actors as they rehearse and perform operatic repertoire tailored to fit young voices.

Engage with Us

Insightful. Engaging. Inspiring.

We have brought students to San Francisco Opera since 1939. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of Bay Area students have attended these performances.

Adults and college students attend engaging panels, lectures and backstage tours.

The Year of Compassion

Opera stories are human stories. With that in mind, the Opera Guild is launching something new this year—a key concept to inspire and shape our award-winning programming, and to celebrate the students, educators, artists and communities with whom we have forged such meaningful relationships. Through art we better understand others. We walk in their shoes, see differing points of view, gain broader cultural perspective and develop compassion.

A red lotus symbolizes compassion in several cultures. Look for this symbol for the Compassion Connection in our programs.

This year we want compassion to be the fire behind our work with you, and we have broken this concept down into key areas of consideration:

  • Where we find family: Creating ensembles on and off the stage
  • How we take care of one another: Examining individual action and responsibility to community
  • Empathetic action: Connecting to those in need
  • Softening the bully: Building self-esteem and communication
