San Francisco Opera Highlights: Maintop in Billy Budd; The Adlers: Live at the Drive-In

Tenor Christopher Colmenero is based in San Francisco and a current member of the prestigious Adler Fellowship at San Francisco Opera. He made his San Francisco Opera debut in the fall of 2019 singing the role of Maintop in Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd. During his first year of the Adler Fellowship, he also covered the roles of Edmondo (Manon Lescaut), Captain Vere (Billy Budd), and Don José (Carmen) at San Francisco Opera. As a member of the 2018 Merola Opera Program, he was featured as Luigi (Il Tabarro) for the Schwabacher Summer Concert and performed a scene from Verdi’s Don Carlo for the Merola Grand Finale concert.

Colmenero was a resident artist with Minnesota Opera during the 2016–17 season where he performed Benvolio and covered Roméo (Roméo et Juliette) and Froh (Das Rheingold). While at Minnesota Opera, he also covered Rodolfo and sang the role of Parpignol (La Bohème).

In 2016, he returned as a guest artist to his alma mater at Purchase College to sing Judge Danforth in the Purchase Opera’s spring production of The Crucible.

He was a 3rd place winner in the 2017 Midwestern Regional Finals and a 2016 Eastern District Finals winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Other awards include encouragement awards from the Giulio Gari Foundation and the Gerda Lissner Foundation as well as being a recipient of the 2014 Richard F. Gold Career Grant.

Colmenero holds an Artist Diploma in Voice/Opera from the Mannes College of Music and Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Voice/Opera from the Purchase College Conservatory of Music.
