2017-18 Season: Ping in Turandot

Baritone Joo Won Kang made his San Francisco Opera debut in 2012 as the Second Priest in The Magic Flute. Recent performance highlights include his debut at the Wexford Festival, Ireland where he sang the leading role of Corrado in Donizetti’s Maria de Rudenz; Chou En-lai in John Adams' Nixon in China with the Los Angeles Philharmonic; Germont in La Traviata with Opera Maine; the title role of Eugene Onegin with North Carolina Opera; and Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Fort Worth Opera. Additional upcoming debuts include Arizona Opera and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Kang has been a top prize winner in many important vocal competitions including First Prize Winner in the Gerda Lissner International Competition, Opera Index Vocal Competition, Giulio Gari International Competition, and Palm Beach International Competition. His San Francisco Opera performance as Captain Gardiner in Jake Heggie’s Moby-Dick was televised nationally on PBS and released on DVD. Kang is a former San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow and 2011 Merola Opera Program graduate.
