Lucas Meachem, the American baritone who performed the role of Figaro in The Barber of Seville in Fall 2015, was named San Francisco Opera’s 2016 Emerging Star of the Year, based on a popular vote conducted online and through social media. Meachem was one of eleven artists featured during the 2015-16 season, with support from the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Emerging Stars Fund. Along with the title, he will receive a cash prize from the Shrems.
Upon learning the results, Meachem said, “It took my talent, hard work, and effort to get on that list, but it took the support of my amazing friends, family, and fans to win. Thank you to all of those who voted. Community is fundamental to the progression of opera and I am a lucky guy to have such an amazing one. Thank you SFO for the opportunity to expose such incredible talent of today's opera stage. Congratulations to all of the nominees--can't wait to share the stage with you all soon—and an especially special thanks to Jan and Maria Shrem!”
