Book to Bravo!

Create an opera inspired by a story or fable from class curriculum.           Available in English or Spanish.

Students engage with curriculum in new ways as they bring literature to life through music and theater. Using interpretative skills and their own imaginative voices, they write scenes and songs, design and rehearse their work, and perform for their classmates in a culminating performance.

Information for Teachers

For grades 4–8. The program consists of ten 90-minute class sessions, a performance, and a 45-minute follow-up session. Two teaching artists plan content with the classroom teacher, who also works with students to complete assignments between visits. Access to performance space and a piano in good working order is necessary.

Cost

$1,200 for each participating classroom. Scholarships are available for qualifying schools.

The Hero's Journey

Adaptation of literature or social issues into a musical piece allows students to deeply engage with different cultures, ideologies and character traits. Careful examination of character motivation, and the means by which characters try to achieve their objectives, illuminate the values and morals that often determine the difference between tragedy and comedy.
