An Italian Adventure for Opera Scouts

In April 2018, a group of 18 Opera Scouts will embark on a 10-day cultural and artistic exploration through Italy! We will visit cultural landmarks and important theaters in Venice, Florence and Rome. Along the way, Scouts will have opportunities to perform, attend performances and exchange ideas and music with Italian peers in each city.

Who It's For

Opera Scouts ages 12–18. Students must be active Opera Scouts starting no later than September 2017.

Three nights in Venice, two nights in Florence and three nights in Rome 


$4,200 per student. Fee is payable in installments starting October 7, 2017. Scholarships are available for qualifying students.

Please submit your application for Opera Scouts by September 15, 2017. Eligibility for the Italia (in)Canta adventure is not guaranteed after this date.

Live auditions will be held on September 18–19, 2017. Scholarship applicants will be asked for additional information upon receipt of application.

Trip Details
  • Students will travel in a group, traveling from and returning to San Francisco International Airport.
  • Lodging includes hotels, hostels, and convents, with two to four individuals per room.
  • We will have one adult chaperone for every four students. Chaperones will be Opera Guild staff and teaching artists with language facility and considerable experience traveling abroad and leading groups of teens.



All students must:

  • Join Opera Scouts in September 2017 and attend at least two weekly Opera Scouts meetings per month. 
  • Complete Merit Badge projects in the fall.
  • Participate in all rehearsals and performances of Lucinda y las Flores de la Nochebuena on December 6–9, 2017.


  • Scholarships are available for eight Opera Scouts to cover the costs of airfare, accommodations, transfers, entrance to all attractions, performance tickets, breakfasts, dinners and transportation between cities. The cost of this trip for non-scholarship students is $4,200, payable in installments starting on October 7, 2017.
  • All students, including those on scholarship, will be responsible for any costs associated with obtaining passports, lunches, phone plan charges, personal purchases, souveniers and travel to and from San Francisco International Airport.
  • Opera Scouts will participate in fundraising events and challenges throughout the year, including a special benefit concert for the trip.


  • Music and art are instrumental in helping students develop discipline, collaboration and problem-solving skills, as well as self-esteem and curiosity.
  • Travel and cultural exchange broaden our viewpoints and deepen our appreciation of beauty.
  • Scouts from different peer groups will make art together here at home, before engaging with Italian students abroad, gaining empathy for one another and cultures different from their own.
  • To demystify international travel and the global understanding it can bring, sparking a curiosity that can lead students to dream big.
