Your Speaker

Jonathan Khuner, a longtime Berkeley resident, has been giving Opera Guild and pre-curtain talks for quite a few seasons. His most recent Guild lecture was during the 2017-18 season for Turandot. Khuner worked as assistant conductor and prompter at S.F. Opera from 1982 to 2015, also at the Metropolitan Opera (from 1996) and the Lyric Opera of Chicago (from 1991). Khuner has assisted or conducted in Germany, Italy, Israel, Albania, and Nepal. His principal current post is as Music Director at West Edge Opera in Berkeley, where he has conducted over 90 productions since 1984 (when it started as Berkeley Opera). He also appears frequently leading productions at many of California’s opera companies, such as Island City Opera. Highlights of the last season or two include Tristan und Isolde at the Herbst Theatre for the Claude Heater Foundation in August 2018, The Ring (condensed) for Washington’s Pacific Northwest Opera in May 2019, and Missy Mazzoli’s Breaking the Waves at West Edge, August 2019. Before going into the performance field, Khuner earned degrees in Mathematics and Musicology from the University of California, Berkeley.
