Your Speaker

Bruce Lamott is the scholar-in-residence of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale and director of the Philharmonia Chorale. He is also a professor of music history at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, focusing on music of the 18th century, in particular the operas of Handel and Mozart and works of J.S. Bach. For thirty-six years, he taught music history to high school sophomores in a yearlong interdisciplinary course of music, art, and European history in Western Civilization: History of the Arts, a cornerstone of the academic curriculum at San Francisco University High School. Dr. Lamott is known for his witty and accessible style in lectures for the San Francisco Opera and Opera Guild, the Carmel Bach Festival, and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, as well as teacher inservices and masterclasses for San Francisco Opera's Education Program, California Music Educators,  and the Junior Bach Festival. He also teaches masterclasses in harpsichord continuo accompaniment for the Merola Opera Program.

A graduate of Lewis and Clark College, 'Doc' Lamott--as he was known to thousands of UHS graduates--earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in musicology at Stanford University. In his thirty-year career at the Carmel Bach Festival, he served as harpsichordist, lecturer, education director, and from 1991-2003, choral director and conductor of the concerts in the Carmel Mission Basilica.
