San Francisco Opera’s Department of Diversity, Equity and Community (DEC) envisions a vibrant arts world in which people of all races create, share and enjoy resources and relationships equitably, unleashing individual potential, embracing collective responsibility and generating global prosperity in the arts and beyond.

There is continued racial unrest across the country. Many are engaged in charged dialogues that task us with collectively envisioning a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable future. The resounding cries for justice demand that we re-imagine wellness and safety in this new era. These calls to action serve as reminders that the commitment to racial justice and equity is an ongoing process of transformation that lives beyond the moment. San Francisco Opera hears this message and recommits to transformation by standing in solidarity with the San Francisco Human Rights Commission in support of the pronouncement passed on June 25th, 2020, declaring anti-Black racism a human rights and public health crisis in San Francisco.

As one of the largest performing arts nonprofits in the Bay Area, we acknowledge that we cannot purport to be a cultural asset of the city whose name we bear and not heed the call to fight for justice. SF Opera continues to critically examine how our policies, practices, and ways of doing business either dismantle or maintain systems of inequity. We invite others to stand with us so that we can collectively move toward a climate of healing and reconciliation rooted in anti-racism.
