Valery Portnov

Bass-baritone Valery Portnov made his solo debut at San Francisco Opera as the First Strelets (Khovanshchina) in 1984 and most recently created the role of Marty Kamen in The Bonesetter’s Daughter. A member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus, he has appeared as a soloist in more than twenty Company productions, including L’Africaine, La Gioconda, War and Peace, Death in Venice, Arabella, Peter Grimes, The Tsar’s Bride, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, The Maid of Orleans, and La Rondine. He made his California operatic debut as Silvano (Un Ballo in Maschera) at West Bay Opera and returned to that company as Daland (Der Fliegende Holländer), Count des Grieux (Manon), Oroveso (Norma), Méphistophélès (Faust), and Caspar (Der Freischütz). He also appeared in principal roles at Berkeley Opera, Oakland Opera Theater, and Livermore Valley Opera.
