2018–19 Season: Director of It's a Wonderful Life
Leonard Foglia made his San Francisco Opera debut in 2008 as director of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s Three Decembers. He returned in 2012 to stage Heggie and Scheer’s Moby-Dick, which was telecast internationally as part of Great Performances’ 40th anniversary season and released on DVD. Other world-premiere operas include Everest for the Dallas Opera; Cold Mountain for the Santa Fe Opera and Opera Philadelphia; The End of the Affair for Houston Grand Opera; and It’s a Wonderful Life at Houston Grand Opera. His production of Dead Man Walking was produced by New York City Opera and has been seen across the U.S. as well at Madrid’s Teatro Real and the Barbican in London. As a librettist, he wrote and directed the “Mariachi operas” El Pasado Nunca Se Termina (The Past Is Never Finished) and Cruzar la Cara de la Luna (To Cross the Face of the Moon) in collaboration with composer José “Pepe” Martínez, and A Coffin in Egypt with composer Ricky Ian Gordon. On Broadway, Foglia directed Master Class with Zoe Caldwell and Audra McDonald, Thurgood with Laurence Fishburne (filmed for HBO), The People in the Picture, On Golden Pond with James Earl Jones, Wait Until Dark with Marisa Tomei and Quentin Tarantino, and The Gin Game with Jones and Cicely Tyson.
