2016–17 Season: Director of Don Giovanni

Making his San Francisco Opera directorial debut, Jacopo Spirei has staged Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, Pilger von Mekka, and Charles Wuorinen's Brokeback Mountain at Salzburg’s Landestheater. His engagements as director also include Falstaff at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe; Cambiale di Matrimonio at Theater an der Wien; The Bear, Maderna's Satyricon, and Matrimonio Segreto at Danish Royal Opera; Pagliacci at Wexford Festival Opera; and a double bill of Bastiano e Bastiana and La Serva Padrona at the Lugo Opera Festival and Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Spirei has worked with the renowned Graham Vick as associate and revival director all over the world with engagements at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Birmingham Opera Company (including the world premiere of Stockhausen's Mittwoch aus Licht), Houston Grand Opera, Bregenz Festival, New National Theater Tokyo, and Teatro Sao Carlos in Lisbon (Wagner's Ring). Spirei studied arts and drama in Bologna, Italy and filmmaking in New York at the New York Film Academy.
