2019–20 Season: Set Designer, The Marriage of Figaro
Erhard Rom’s designs have appeared on the San Francisco Opera’s stage for Lucia di Lammermoor, Susannah and Nixon in China. He has created settings for more than 200 productions internationally and in 2015 he was named as a finalist in the International Opera Awards in London. His designs have frequently been featured in the Prague Quadrennial International Design exhibition.
In addition to San Francisco Opera, he has collaborated with many of the world’s leading directors for companies including: the Royal Swedish Opera for Nixon in China, Seattle Opera for Semele and La Bohème; Washington National Opera for Silent Night; Wexford Festival Opera for Silent Night; Houston Grand Opera for Rigoletto; Vancouver Opera for Dead Man Walking and Otello; Glimmerglass Festival for A Blizzard on Marblehead Neck, Later the Same Evening and Silent Night; Opera Theatre of Saint Louis for Faust, Jane Eyre and Carmen; Minnesota Opera for The Shining, Dead Man Walking, Rusalka and Romeo et Juliette, plus Boston Lyric Opera, Opéra de Montréal, The Atlanta Opera and Wolf Trap, among many others.
In 2014 he designed the European premiere of Silent Night for the Wexford Festival Opera and the 2015 Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards gave it two accolades, including audience choice and best opera production of 2014.
Rom also teaches design at Montclair State University in New Jersey.
