Award winning opera director and designer Antony McDonald makes his San Francisco Opera debut with Hansel and Gretel, a new co-production with Royal Opera, Covent Garden. As a director and designer his credits include Der Ring des Nibelungen for Nederlandse Reisopera; Rusalka, The Queen of Spades and Fidelio for Grange Park Opera; Lohengrin for Welsh National Opera, Polish National Opera and Greek National Opera; Powder Her Face for Dublin’s Irish National Opera; Maria Stuarda at Opera North; L’Enfant et les Sortilèges for the Bolshoi Theatre; Tristan und Isolde at Opéra National du Rhin; The Importance of Being Earnest at Northern Ireland Opera; Die Gezeichneten for Switzerland’s St. Gallen and Ariadne auf Naxos for Scottish Opera and Opera Holland Park.

He has co-directed and co-designed productions with Richard Jones, and designed opera productions at leading venues for directors including Tim Albery, Robert Carsen, Richard Jones, Daniel Kramer and Frederic Wake-Walker. He has also designed for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Court, Old Vic, Almeida, National Theatre, Second Stride, Scottish Ballet and Royal Ballet, among others.

McDonald’s awards include Set Designer of the Year at the 2013 International Opera Awards. He is a Royal Designer for Industry. Plans include designing Katya Kabanova for the Royal Opera and directing and designing Werther at Norway’s Bergen National Opera.
