2018–19 Season: Mr. Potter in It's a Wonderful Life
Baritone Rod Gilfry made his San Francisco Opera debut in 1995 as Valentin in Faust and he has since appeared as Stanley Kowalski in the 1998 world premiere of André Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire, Lescaut in Manon, Belcore in L’Elisir d’Amore, Danilo in The Merry Widow, the title role of Doktor Faust, and Lionel in The Maid of Orleans. More recent projects include the Music Master in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Santa Fe Opera, Alberto Roc in Thomas Adès’ The Exterminating Angel at the Metropolitan Opera, Howard K. Stern in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Anna Nicole with New York City Opera and Covent Garden, and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte with Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Later this season, he performs as Prospero in Katie Mitchell’s production of Miranda at Opéra National de Bordeaux and Théâtre de Caen, Don Alfonso at the Santa Fe Opera and Korea National Opera, and the Narrator in David Lang’s The Loser at Los Angeles Opera. Gilfry created the role of Mr. Potter for the 2016 world premiere of It’s a Wonderful Life at Houston Grand Opera.
