2018–19 Season: Sara, Roberto Devereux; Ježibaba, Rusalka
American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton returns to San Francisco Opera this season as Ježibaba in Rusalka. She made her Company debut in 2014 as Adalgisa in Norma and recently took on Fricka, Waltraute, and Second Norn in the Ring cycle, as well as her role debut as Sara in Roberto Devereux. Later this spring, she brings her Fricka to the Metropolitan Opera’s Ring cycle.
Barton is the winner of the Beverly Sills Artist Award and Richard Tucker Award, both Main and Song Prizes at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Her debut solo album, All Who Wander, featuring songs by Mahler, Dvorak, and Sibelius, was recently named winner of the 2018 BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award.
Barton’s appearances in the current season include Sister Helen Prejean in Dead Man Walking for Atlanta Opera, Azucena in Il Trovatore at Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Bavarian State Opera, a Renée Fleming Voices recital at the Kennedy Center, and the Verdi Requiem at Royal Opera, Covent Garden.
She has appeared with Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax at Tanglewood, and in recital at Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall. She has also sung Adalgisa at the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and Houston Grand Opera; Eboli in Don Carlo at Deutsche Oper Berlin and Washington National Opera; Léonor in La Favorite at Teatro Real Madrid; Giovanna Seymour in Anna Bolena at the Metropolitan Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago; and Fricka/Waltraute/Second Norn in the Ring cycle at Houston Grand Opera.
