2016–17 Season: Title role in Don Giovanni
Winner of the Toti dal Monte International Competition in 1989 and 1991, Italian bass-baritone Ildebrando D’Arcangelo makes his San Francisco Opera debut in the title role of Don Giovanni. His roles including Leporello, Don Pasquale, Figaro, Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Giorgio (I Puritani), Mustafà (L’Italiana in Algeri), Selim, Alidoro (La Cenerentola), and Henry VIII (Anna Bolena), Don Giovanni is central to D’Arcangelo’s repertoire. In autumn 2010, he premiered two new productions of Don Giovanni at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Wiener Staatsoper and then in 2011 a new production conducted by Daniel Barenboim at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, followed by a new Zeffirelli production at the Arena di Verona. He also recorded the title role for Deutsche Grammophon at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden which was released in autumn 2012 to critical acclaim. More recently, he has performed Don Giovanni at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; San Diego Opera; the Salzburg Festival; and Los Angeles Opera. Upcoming engagements include Banquo in Macbeth at Madrid’s Teatro Real and Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Selim at Munich’s Bavarian State Opera; Leporello at Royal Opera, Covent Garden; and Dulcamara in L’Elisir d’Amore at the Metropolitan Opera.
