2016–17 Season: Janek in The Makropulos Case
Winner of the Birgit Nilsson prize at the 2016 Operalia competition, tenor Brenton Ryan makes his San Francisco Opera debut as Janek in The Makropulos Case. Last season saw Ryan’s Metropolitan Opera debut as Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail; Beppe in Pagliacci and Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte with Los Angeles Opera; and Die Narr in Wozzeck at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Highlights of previous seasons include his debut with Houston Grand Opera as Henrik in A Little Night Music, Léon in The Ghosts of Versailles with Los Angeles Opera, and Cavaliere Belfiore in Il Viaggio a Reims at Wolf Trap Opera. Later this season, Ryan makes his debut at San Diego Opera as Gastone in La Traviata, returns to Los Angeles Opera as Pedrillo and makes his debut with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis singing the roles of Titorelli, Flogger, and Student in the U.S. premiere of Philip Glass’ The Trial. Ryan is a graduate of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and DePaul University.
