2018–19 Season: Micaëla in Carmen
Making her San Francisco Opera debut as Micaëla in Carmen, Romanian soprano Anita Hartig became a member of the Vienna State Opera ensemble in 2009. Early successes there as Musetta (La Bohème), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Despina (Così fan tutte), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Marzelline (Fidelio), and Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) led to her much-acclaimed 2012 debut at Teatro alla Scala in Milan as Mimì in La Bohème, a role that she repeated at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 2013 and at the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra Bastille, and Bavarian State Opera in 2014. The 2015–16 season brought Hartig an important role debut as Violetta Valéry in David McVicar’s production of La Traviata at Gran Teatre de Liceu in Barcelona, followed by Liù in Turandot at the Metropolitan Opera. Her 2017–18 appearances include Antonia/Stella in Les Contes d'Hoffmann at the Metropolitan Opera, Marguerite in Faust at the Vienna State Opera and Hamburg State Opera, and Mimì at the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, and Madrid's Teatro Real.
