Legacy Giving Officer

The Legacy Giving Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding planned gift prospects, responding to planned giving inquiries, overseeing estate administration, and working collaboratively with direct reports and development colleagues to execute San Francisco Opera’s legacy giving fundraising programs.



  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (preferred) or equivalent work experience


  • .Minimum five (5) years in fundraising, legacy giving, financial planning and/or banking/investment services, including a demonstrated record of accomplishment in managing relationships, closing gifts and meeting goals
  • Formal training in charitable estate planning highly preferred
  • Experience with endowment campaigns preferred


  • Knowledge of principles and practices of fundraising, especially legacy giving techniques
  • Knowledge of performing arts and/or the operatic art form
  • Proven success in managing, motivating and empowering direct reports
  • Fondness for and appreciation of the wisdom and experiences of more mature givers; ability to gain their trust through unquestionable integrity
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, conveying complicated procedures and gift alternatives clearly and succinctly
  • Proven track-record discussing sensitive family and financial issues with donors, professional advisors and heirs
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with staff, volunteers, donors, legal and financial advisors, and the public in a professional, confidential and tactful manner
  • Familiarity with Bay Area philanthropic community highly preferred
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorites, and exercise good judgment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Tessitura and planned giving software experience highly preferred
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Capacity to attend evening and weekend Opera events in the Bay Area
  • Must perform the functions of the position in a safe manner


  • Works closely with the Deputy Director of Development to create and successfully execute effective strategies and plans to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward legacy giving commitments and oversee their execution
  • Supervises the Legacy Giving and Research Associate, including oversight of estate administration, production of SFO’s annual report on endowment performance, and the creation and updating of legacy giving materials; cooperates with the Director of Prospect Research and Strategy to coordinate the Associate’s priorities and workflow
  • In collaboration with the Director of Annual Giving, creates, executes, and monitors a legacy-giving marketing plan, including direct mail campaigns, and maintaining and enhancing the legacy giving presence on the Opera’s website
  • Serves as the principal contact for a portfolio of legacy giving donors; completes and documents substantive calls and/or face-to-face visits with legacy gift prospects; partners with giving officers in all legacy giving strategies
  • Independently responds to donor inquiries with appropriate information on bequests, life income gifts and other gift planning vehicles
  • Manages the Bel Canto Legacy Society and Legacy Giving Committee
  • Attends trainings and professional events and reads industry publications to stay informed on tax law changes and planned giving techniques
  • Serves as resource to staff and donors about investment and tax information, as appropriate


  • In collaboration with development leadership, implements recognition strategies for legacy giving, including ensuring accurate and consistent policies and procedures around program book listings
  • Partners with departmental staff to facilitate successful events and cultivation opportunities.
  • Work closely with endowment and finance personnel as appropriate
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of donor contacts and ongoing communication with current donors and prospects via database and hard file notations
