Senior Leadership Giving Officer


Reporting to the Director of Individual and Leadership Giving and in partnership with a team of giving officers, manages the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plan for individuals in an assigned portfolio of donors who primarily give or have the potential to give $100,000+ annually.

 EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (preferred) or equivalent work experience.


Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive fundraising experience with proven success in building and growing long-lasting relationships that result in 6- and 7-figure-and-above gifts and meeting significant revenue goals.


Expertise in Principles and Practices of Fundraising:

  • Successful track-record meeting significant revenue goals, working with high-capacity donors to cultivate and solicit 6- and 7-figure gifts.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex gift strategies and negotiations in collaboration with senior staff and volunteer leadership.
  • Demonstrated achievement in providing superior strategic leadership and donor-facing service, utilizing best practices in fundraising.
  • Demonstrated history of successfully engaging and qualifying new giving prospects.
  • Demonstrated history of successfully meeting financial goals for special funding initiatives and multi-year funding campaigns.

Collaborative Skills:

  • A seasoned collaborator, ready to work harmoniously with a team of colleagues comprised of individual giving officers, prospect research staff, project management staff, and administrative support staff.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with staff, volunteers, donors and the public in a professional, confidential and tactful manner while supporting the Company’s vision and values.
  • Exemplary diplomacy, problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Knowledge of Bay Area Performing Arts:

  • Knowledge of performing arts and/or the operatic art form strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Bay Area community donor base highly preferred.
  • Ability to attend evening and weekend Opera events in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Ability to travel on Opera business as needed, including potential travel for organized patron travel programs when health restrictions allow.

Technical Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database navigation.
  • Tessitura management system experience preferred.
  • Must be able to independently set priorities; coordinate multiple projects simultaneously; meet firm deadlines.
  • Ability to utilize technology and tools to organize and independently set priorities.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both oral and in written; ability to convey complicated information in a clear, succinct and respectful manner.


  • Reporting to the Director of Individual and Leadership Giving, serves as the principal contact for a portfolio of the Opera’s highest-rated donors and prospects.

  • Develops and executes strategies and plans to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward the Opera’s most capable donors and prospects for 6-, 7- and 8-figure annual, capital, special-purpose and endowment commitments.
  • Produces results within a metrics-driven approach to major-gift fundraising, including tracking moves management within a system for annual and multi-year goal setting.
  • Ensures highest levels of individualized and confidential stewardship for annual, endowment and campaign donors.
  • Maintains updated revenue and expense budget forecasts for the principal giving portfolio.
  • Works closely with senior leadership team to develop and successfully execute strategies to ensure departmental short- and long-term goals in support of the strategic mission, vision and values of San Francisco Opera.
  • Works closely with Director of Individual and Leadership Giving and gift officer team on moves management.
  • Works closely with the Director of Institutional Giving to identify, cultivate, and solicit donors with additional Foundation funding opportunities.
  • Works closely with Director of Prospect Research to expand giving pipeline.
  • Working closely with Legacy Giving team, executes strategies to integrate legacy giving into annual, capital, special-purpose, and endowment solicitations.
  • Executes and implements recognition and stewardship in collaboration with key team members.
  • Engages in identification, cultivation, and solicitation of Board prospects as needed.
  • Reports on achievements to Medallion Society Board Committee.


  • Works to secure the community involvement and support necessary to assure the future of San Francisco Opera.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of contacts and ongoing communications with current and potential donors.
  • Hosts giving prospects and donors at various events and functions.
  • Works in partnership with Office of General Director, annual and leadership giving, special events and stewardship to facilitate successful events and cultivation opportunities.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
