Associate Operations Director

PURPOSE: To work closely with the Director of Operations on the planning and implementation of a wide variety of company matters and logistics, focusing on the oversight of the non-soloist artists of San Francisco Opera, related union agreements and negotiations, select special projects and presentations, internal communication and efficiency, and day-to-day operations.


  • Bachelor’s degree in music or related field from an accredited college or university; master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a performing arts organization, preferably multi-repertory operatic or symphonic.
  • Experience with budgeting and forecasting.
  • Experience in managing or oversight of professional orchestras, choruses and dance groups preferred.
  • Experience in a variety of programming environments, ranging in scale and format.
  • Supervision of union and non-union staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of music, especially opera repertoire.
  • Background in production management, company management, and/or stage management is advantageous.
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office applications essential, especially Word and Excel; database skills desirable.
  • Ability to work independently; prioritize tasks; and exercise good judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities successfully.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with staff, artists, union representatives, patrons, and external partners in a professional, confidential and tactful manner.

  • Position requires evening and weekend obligations.


  • Assist with the support and oversight of the various departments within the Operations department.
  • Manage the Orchestra Manager and Chorus/Dance Manager to oversee and participate in assignments, schedules, payroll process, auditions, personnel matters, and other related duties.
  • Manage the Orchestra Librarian including rental/royalty oversight.
  • Work with the Music Planning Manager to ensure a smooth working relationship between the Orchestra Library and Music Library.
  • Responsible for deadline management related to AGMA and AFM.
  • Work with the Director of Operations on labor relations with AGMA and AFM, including artist and union correspondence, collective bargaining agreement administration and negotiation, union meetings, and day-to-day operations.
  • Provide budgetary support for to the Director of Operations.
  • Work with the Orchestra and Chorus/Dance Managers and Orchestra Librarian on budgeting, forecasting and scenario modeling, creating music operations budget documentation, and inputting budget data into the company budgeting program (Adaptive Insights).
  • Work with Rehearsal and Production departments to ensure a seamless scheduling process between annual schedules and weekly/daily schedules, and work to simplify processes currently required to transfer information between different schedules.
  • Attend weekly in-season schedule meetings run by Rehearsal department, and assist in troubleshooting daily repertory company schedule issues where needed.
  • Ensure coordination of backstage/offstage orchestra and chorus requirements, working with the Music Planning Manager, Operations staff, as well as the Production Stage Manager. 
  • Create banda schedules, and supervise creation and timely distribution of orchestra, chorus, and dancer master schedules, working with Rehearsal, Orchestra and Chorus/Dance Managers, Music Planning Manager, and Production Stage Manager.
  • Oversee rehearsal activities for orchestra, chorus, and dancers, working on-site with Orchestra and Chorus/Dance Managers, Production staff, and shop stewards to ensure work rules are adhered to and that rehearsals run smoothly and productively.
  • Develop system and method of documenting yearly the storage locations of musical instruments and equipment (chairs, sound shields, music stands/lights, etc.) during the off-season, coordinating with Orchestra Manager and Properties Master.
  • Work with the Chorus/Dance Manager and Orchestra Manager to ensure cross-training of critical functions within those offices.
  • Liaise with Music Planning & Artistic Planning managers on interrelated issues between Operations and Artistic departments.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of special initiatives involving the orchestra, chorus, and dancers, as well as SF Opera Lab programming as needed.


  • Oversee plan for instrument purchases and maintenance with Orchestra Manager.
  • Administer instrument insurance.
  • Contract child choruses as needed.
  • Support and contribute to portions of the company’s artistic and music planning/programming process as needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
