PRODUCTION NEW TO SAN FRANCISCO OPERA

IGOR STRAVINSKY
Libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman
In Stravinsky's operatic masterpiece, a reckless young Englishman is seduced by
the Devil—or is it his own shadow?—into abandoning his true love for a life of shallow pleasures.
Poet W.H. Auden collaborated with the composer to create this morality tale about materialism and madness. The visionary Canadian director Robert Lepage, creator of Cirque du Soleil's dazzling Las Vegas extravaganza KÀ, stages this new
production. Donald Runnicles conducts a veteran cast including tenor William Burden (as Tom Rakewell), soprano Laura Aikin (as Anne Trulove), mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves (as Baba the Turk), and bass-baritone James Morris as the
devilish Nick Shadow.
