GIUSEPPE VERDI
Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave
A
Scottish noble's lust for political power is provoked by a tantalizing prophecy
and stoked by his manipulative spouse in this dark tale of unchecked ambition.
Verdi's early masterpiece, the first of his three Shakespeare operas, features a
man and wife who find it easier to murder their way to the Scottish throne than
to cleanse themselves of the subsequent guilt. Renowned baritone Thomas
Hampson returns to San Francisco Opera as the haunted Macbeth, and the exciting young Italian maestro Massimo Zanetti
conducts Verdi's vividly dramatic score.
