THE STORY
The Marschallin tries to deny the passage of time by embarking on an affair with a young nobleman, Octavian. Their night-long tryst is interrupted by the Marschallin’s boorish cousin, Baron Ochs, who announces his intention to wed the beautiful innocent, Sophie. The Marschallin proposes that Octavian deliver the customary silver rose to Sophie, announcing the proposal. Trouble is, the two young people fall in love, which means Ochs must be thwarted. In a rapturous final trio, the Marschallin realizes that the real act of love is to give up Octavian.
