GIACOMO PUCCINI
Puccini's ravishing score brings to life the tortured journey of a young woman as she learns, too late, the true nature of love.
THE SCENE
18th-century France and Louisiana
THE STORY
The delectable Manon elopes to Paris with the Chevalier des Grieux, but soon leaves him to become the mistress of the wealthy roué Geronte. Nostalgic for true love, she resolves to return to des Grieux, but not before appropriating all the jewelry that Geronte has lavished upon her. Caught in the act, she is swiftly convicted of theft and deported to Louisiana, where she dies in the arms of her first, and truest, love.
