CURRICULUM AND EDUCATOR ADVISOR EDUCATION DEPARTMENT (Part-time)
DESCRIPTION
A part-time Curriculum and Teaching Artist Supervisor (average of 19 hours per week) is needed to assist the Education Department with supervision of all K-12 school-based programs. The Supervisor will work closely with the Director of Education and Education Program Associate.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
This is an exciting opportunity to come in on the ground-level of a new and growing department that provides multiple options of high quality opera education for adults, students, educators and families. The person in this position will provide crucial support for K-12 school programs, oversee curriculum development, supervise a growing corps of Teaching Artists (TAs), and advise educators.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustration only - not all duties are included)
- Acts as liaison between TAs and Education Department; responds to (non-logistical) TA inquiries and offers advice and suggestions as needed.
- Reviews TA job applications and conducts interviews
- Observes programs in schools and classrooms; recommends improvements to TAs and educators based on observations.
- Attends select school team planning meetings with educators and TAs; offers suggestions for collaborative curriculum development and lesson planning.
- Develops and revises curriculum for school programs based on observations and input from TAs and educators.
- Acts as member of the design team for, and occasionally leads, TA Professional Development sessions, Professional Development sessions for internal partners (including Production Department staff and Adler Fellows), and Educator Professional Development sessions; attends all Professional Development sessions.
- Assists with evaluating school applications for programs, including interviewing schools.
- Collaborates with community partners (i.e. school district personnel, other arts organizations) and internal partners (i.e. Production Department) in implementing programs.
- Represents the San Francisco Opera in arts and education communities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university (preferred)
- 5 years teaching experience on the K-12 level, preferably in one or more of the arts
- 3 years management experience, preferably supervising educators
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Opera and/or the performing arts (preferred)
- School systems, Kindergarten – University
- Bay Area arts education community, education institutions, and school systems
- National education policies
- Local, state and national learning standards
Skill in:
- Liaising between diverse stakeholders
- Supervising a group of staff working off-site in multiple locations (preferred)
- Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)
Ability to:
- Communicate tactfully, professionally, effectively, and accurately both orally and in writing
- Establish working relationships and interact in a professional manner with a wide range of people
- Work independently and resourcefully to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision; and work as a member of a team
- Complete projects with a high degree of accuracy, detail, and timeliness; and handle multiple projects simultaneously by accurately setting priorities
- Work occasional evenings and weekends
