Position: Teaching Artist

TEACHING ARTIST
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
(Part-time)


DESCRIPTION
Teaching Artists are needed to assist the Education Department in providing high quality opera education opportunities in partnership with K-12 schools and universities; and in family and adult programs.  Teaching Artists will work closely with the Director of Education and Education Program Associate.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
This is an exciting opportunity to come in on the ground-level of a newly-designed and growing department that will provide multiple options of high quality opera education for adults, students, educators and families. School-based pilot programs will begin in the 2008-09 school year with professional development and planning beginning in the fall and in-school work occurring in 2009. Current partnerships will be with SFUSD and Alameda County Schools; future districts will include Silicon Valley and the entire Bay Area. School partnership work will include: guiding educators and students in the creation of mini process-based operas connected to their curriculum; preparation of educators and students for attending operas, experiencing backstage tours, and visits from guest opera artists and production experts; developing curriculum; and contributing to opera education materials. All school-based programs will be designed to meet the needs of educators and will be guided by school teachers via team-taught instruction in the classroom with teaching artists. Teaching Artists will be in the role of providing resources, expertise and knowledge about opera; and will be in a project management role.  University partnerships and family and adult opera education programs will also be piloted during the 2008-09 season.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustration only - not all duties are included)
Plans and implements school-based program content in collaboration with school teachers (public and private), as guided by the department’s school partnership design; including appropriate evaluation, assessment, and documentation.

  • Participates in ongoing professional development and leads professional development for teaching artists and educators.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively with department staff and fellow teaching artists as well as develops and maintains relationships with external partners and stakeholders including but not limited to: the SFO Guild education department, other arts organizations, and school district administrators and educators.
  • Plans and implements university partnerships and family and adult opera education programs.
  • Represents the San Francisco Opera in the arts and education communities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.  Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Extensive experience and active current practice in your art form(s.) Artistic resources are needed in the following disciplines (to teach not to perform): poetry and libretto (script) writing and editing, vocal and instrumental performance, theatre/drama performance, stage direction, composition/songwriting, dance/movement performance, videography, and set, costume and lighting design
  • Experience teaching students and educators (any grade from Kindergarten through Grade 12); and/or
  • Experience working with University students and faculty, families or adult learners

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Opera and/or the performing arts (required)
  • School systems, Kindergarten through 12 and University (please note your experience working in inner-city school settings and with English Language Learners, youth at-risk for academic failure, and special education populations)
  • SFUSD Arts Master Plan, Alameda County Learning Frameworks and CA State Standards
  • Bay Area arts-in-education community

Skill in:

  • Teaching artistic skills and practice
  • Partnership-building and maintaining
  • Planning, organizing, and coordinating
  • Classroom management
  • Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel and Outlook)


Ability to:

  • Present information clearly and in an interesting manner to various audiences, both orally and in writing
  • Exercise initiative and judgment in the improvement, development, and implementation of education programs
  • Pursue and be willing to learn and implement best practices in the arts-in-education field
  • Establish working relationships and interact in a professional manner with a wide range of people
  • Work independently and resourcefully to complete assigned tasks; and work as a member of a team
  • Be flexible in regard to schedule and work location
