We are pleased to announce auditions for our 2011 Chorus Season.

Time:   Auditions are by appointment only.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Complete the Chorus Application Form and email (preferred), mail or fax it to the Chorus Office. If you need a copy of the application mailed to you, leave a message for Ann Hughes at:  (415) 565-3205.

If you are interested in submitting an application for audition, please note the following:

  • If you have auditioned for 2009 and/or 2010, you do not need to submit letters of recommendation or resume/photos, although you may update these if you wish.
  • If you have sung with the San Francisco Opera Chorus, you only need to fill in the application through the section marked Employment Preference. You do not need to submit letters of recommendation or resume/photos, unless you would like to do so.
  • Be certain to read the Basic Requirements listed below -- and don't forget to send the letter of recommendation, either included with the application, or sent directly by the reference.
  • Do not forget to date and sign page two of the application. 
  • Please let us know of specific time conflicts you may have during the posted audition dates above, so that we do not schedule you at that time.
  • Once assigned an audition date / time, no changes will be made with less than five (5) days' notice, except in the case of emergency or illness.
  • If you qualify for an audition, you will be notified by mail or email no later than 1 week before the audition date. Unless you need to make significant travel arrangements, please do not call to ask your audition date / time.
  • For all auditions an accompanist will be provided. However, you are welcome to bring your own.
  • There is no guarantee that there will be practice rooms available before your audition.

2011 Chorus Auditions / Basic Requirements 
The San Francisco Opera Chorus is a group of singers professionally trained in classical singing. While a degree in music is not required, the following minimums in training and/or experience are required for the scheduling of an audition:

Regular Chorus & Extra Chorus

  • 4 years of classical voice training - academic or private
  • excellent sight reading ability - music and languages
  • ability to memorize music
  • experience in another professional OPERA or SYMPHONY chorus and/or strong academic or other non-professional experience
  • stage experience - or significant stage training
  • written reference from current voice teacher, coach, or respected operatic professional
  • availability to work according to a complex rehearsal and performance schedule
  • ability to work well in a group situation, under close quarters
  • ability to take and accept direction
  • ability to work in a theatrical environment, including but not limited to the ability to perform in a variety of stage conditions, including flat and raked stages, at stage level and on elevated platforms, and with the use of special scenic effects, including the possible use of stage smoke and fog simulator effects, including but not limited to steam and dry ice.

Note: Past experience in the San Francisco Opera Regular or Extra Chorus will automatically qualify you for an audition.

Audition Specifics:

  • Regular Chorus - 3 to 4 operatic arias contrasting in style and language. Arias should be sung in the original key and language. One aria should be by Mozart.
  • Extra Chorus - 2 to 3 operatic arias contrasting in style and language. Arias should be sung in the original key and language. One aria should be by Mozart.
  • All Auditionees - One aria should be by Mozart. There will likely be sight-reading.

An accompanist will be provided, however, you are welcome to bring your own.
