Associate Director of Principal Giving

PURPOSE:  To manage a portfolio of SFO’s most highly rated donors and prospects. To manage campaigns and initiatives with the purpose of developing principal and transformational gifts for San Francisco Opera.


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (preferred) or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of seven (7) years in nonprofit development, with proven success in major and principal gifts fundraising and meeting significant revenue goals
  • Proven track record of driving 6- and 7-figure annual and special purpose commitments and gifts
  • Proven success managing fundraising programs and budgets
  • Experience supervising direct reports
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database applications
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of fundraising, ticketing and patron services
  • Knowledge of performing arts preferred
  • Tessitura revenue management system experience highly preferred
  • Must be able to set priorities; coordinate multiple projects simultaneously; meet firm deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and convey complicated procedures clearly and succinctly
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with trustees, executive leadership, donors, staff and the public in a professional, confidential and tactful manner
  • Ability to attend evening and weekend opera events in the Bay Area
  • Must perform the functions of the position in a safe manner


  • Manage a portfolio of donors and prospects toward the goal of $1+ million annual, lifetime, capital, special purpose and endowment commitments
  • Serve on management team for major capital campaign
  • Manage campaigns for major fundraising efforts in support of signature company projects and initiatives
  • Strategically partner with trustees, executive leaders and giving officers to ensure timely and effective cultivation and solicitation of individuals with principal gift capacity and inclination
  • Drive efforts to develop a national base of principal gifts donors and major production sponsors, including managing national prospect research, cultivation events and out-of-town salons
  • Manage strategic travel opportunities for principal gifts donors, sponsors and prospects
  • Partner with Director of Principal Giving and Principal Giving Manager to manage activities of the board Directors and Officers Committee
  • Manage activities of board principal gifts committee and as appropriate, campaign steering committees
  • In partnership with Prospect Research Manager and Principal Giving Manager, drive principal gifts prospect identification and tracking processes and procedures
  • Supervise Principal Giving Manager
  • Help assure timely and accurate gift acknowledgement and donor recognition
  • Provide highest levels of individualized stewardship for principal donors
  • Work with staff responsible for Donor Priority Seating strategy development, including donor ranking


  • Ensure maximum optimization of staff, volunteer and material resources within departmental division
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of contacts and ongoing communications with current and potential donors
  • Work closely with all areas of development to support annual campaign and legacy gift fundraising efforts
  • Work in partnership with leadership giving and special events to facilitate successful events and cultivation opportunities
