IN 1577, a group of scholars, artists, and philanthropists known as the Florentine Camerata joined forces in order to reinvent ancient Greek theater. Instead, they made history by devising a new art form that came to be known as opera. Artistic passion, intellectual curiosity, and philanthropic zeal characterized the Camerata then—and now.
TODAY, San Francisco Opera is forming its own Camerata: a group of visionary donors who fund the projects that define the Company’s international reputation. In addition to maintaining their annual support of the Company's infrastructure, Camerata members make multi-year commitments to enable the endeavors that make San Francisco Opera one of the world's finest opera companies.
Reflecting the collaborative nature of opera, many elements overlap and feed each other: a new production may also feature a major artist making a role debut; a commission may also star a singer making an overdue return; a modern masterwork may also be tied into youth education programs. The possibilities are many, offering a compelling, multi-faceted exploration of everything that goes into a world-class opera company.
Upon joining Camerata, members forge their own paths, becoming immersed in the programs that interest them most. Along the way, they enjoy unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to artistic processes and the people that make it all happen.
