A native of Bulgaria, Julian Kovatchev makes his San Francisco Opera debut with a work that he has led in Geneva and Stuttgart. His recent engagements include Tosca in Frankfurt, Carmen at the Arena di Verona, La Bohème at Toronto’s Canadian Opera Company, and Norma at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste. Since his 1985 debut in Trieste, he has appeared regularly on the major Italian theatres and orchestras such as Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, Venice’s La Fenice, and in Palermo, Naples, Rome, Bologna, Genoa, and Cagliari. Career highlights include I Capuleti e i Montecchi in Genoa; Carmen and The Rake’s Progress in Trieste, The Dialogues of the Carmelites in Seville; Il Trovatore in Stuttgart and at the Ravenna Festival; and Un Ballo in Maschera in Verona. Kovatchev’s recent upcoming engagements include a return to the Arena di Verona to lead Carmen; Tosca in Dresden; and Madama Butterfly with Seattle Opera.
