Daniel Slater

Daniel Slater made his San Francisco Opera debut with The Cunning Little Vixen in 2004. He began his opera career as assistant director at Opera North, Royal Opera House, and the Opéra National de Paris. He made his European operatic directing debut at Opera North in 1988 with a production of The Bartered Bride, which was nominated for the Manchester Evening News Best Production Award and the TMA Outstanding Achievement in Opera Award. His American debut was an award-winning production of Wozzeck at the Santa Fe Opera in 1991. Additional operatic work includes productions of La Cenerentola, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Grimes, Xerxes, L’Arbore di Diana, Samson, Lohengrin, Rigoletto, Falstaff, Betrothal in a Monastery, Don Pasquale, Don Giovanni, Manon Lescaut, Manon, L’Elisir d’Amore, Die Zauberflöte, The Cunning Little Vixen, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Der Vogelhändler, La Gazza Ladra, Maometto II, Fortunio, Pénélope, and La Bohème. He has directed at such opera companies and festivals as Bregenz, Berlin, Buxton, Caen, French Institute Theatre, Garsington Opera, Geneva, Grange Park, Glyndebourne, Graz, Guildhall, New Zealand Festival, Opera Ireland, Opéra National de Paris, Opera North, Oslo, Oviedo, San Francisco Opera, Scottish Opera, Stockholm, Strasbourg, Valencia, and Welsh National Opera. Slater was associate director of the Nottingham Playhouse and Tricycle Theatre (1993–95), as well as artistic director of Bristol Express. Theatrical productions include Making Waves (Scarborough), Confusions (Salisbury), Life Goes On (Basingstoke), Grab the Dog (Royal National Theatre Studio), and The Mark (Soho Theatre), among others.
