Stephen Powell made his San Francisco Opera debut in 2007 as Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), a role he has performed with New York City Opera, the San Diego Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Arizona Opera, and New Orleans Opera; he returned in the summer of 2009 as Giorgio Germont in La Traviata. The American baritone’s recent credits include Germont with Los Angeles Opera, Arizona Opera, and New Orleans Opera; Figaro (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) with Hawaii Opera; Miller (Luisa Miller) with the Cincinnati May Festival; and Count Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro) with Indianapolis Opera and Opera Company of North Carolina. Powell has a long relationship with New York City Opera, which began on short notice when he stepped into the title role of Hindemith's Mathis der Maler; he has subsequently sung Ford (Falstaff), the title role in Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria, Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Zurga (Les Pêcheurs de Perles), and Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor) with that company. Powell’s roles with the Metropolitan Opera have included Ping (Turandot) and Shchelkalov (Boris Godunov). Other career highlights include Jokanaan (Salome) and the title role of Eugene Onegin with Cleveland Opera; Marcello (La Bohème) with Lyric Opera of Chicago and in concert with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; Valentin (Faust) with Opera Company of Philadelphia; Giorgio Germont with Portland Opera and Utah Opera; and Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) with Florida Grand Opera, the San Diego Opera, and at the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro.
