A native of the Czech Republic, Stefan Margita made his San Francisco Opera debut as Walther von der Vogelweide in the fall 2007 production of Tannhäuser, and he made his critically acclaimed role debut as Loge in the Company’s 2008 production of Das Rheingold. Margita has performed Laca Klemen (Jenůfa) to great acclaim at opera houses and festivals around the world, including the Glyndebourne Festival, Munich’s Bavarian State Opera, the Saito Kinen Festival, Berlin’s Linden Opera, Prague National Theatre, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Oviedo Opera, Houston Grand Opera and in Antwerp, Tel Aviv and Lyon. The tenor began his international career as Váňa Kudrjáš (Kát'a Kabanová) at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, where he returned in 2004 as Luka Kuzmič (From the House of the Dead)—a role he has also performed at Milan’s La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, Palermo’s Teatro Massimo, the Vienna Festwochen, and the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Margita’s other notable appearances include Walther von der Vogelweide at Milan’s La Scala; the Drum Major (Wozzeck) in Lisbon and with Paris Opera; Zinovy (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk) with Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Grigory (Boris Godunov) at Houston Grand Opera; Edrisi in Szymanowski’s King Roger at Paris Opera and Madrid’s Teatro Real; and Dimitri (Boris Godunov) with Dresden’s Saxon State Opera. Margita sings concerts with important orchestras and conductors throughout Europe.
