John Del Carlo
American bass-baritone John Del Carlo has appeared in nearly forty productions with the Company since his debut in 1973. Among his most notable roles with San Francisco Opera are Bartolo (Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Le Nozze di Figaro), Dulcamara (L’Elisir d’Amore), Donner (Das Rheingold), and the title role of Falstaff. The Merola Opera Program alumnus is a native San Franciscan who was a member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus from 1973 to 1976. Del Carlo has also enjoyed an important relationship with the Metropolitan Opera since 1993. Since his debut as Kothner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) with that company, he has appeared in the title role of Don Pasquale, Dr Bartolo (Il Barbiere di Siviglia, which was broadcast in HD in movie theaters around the world), Swallow (Peter Grimes), Quince (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Mathieu (Andrea Chénier), Frank (Die Fledermaus), Baron Zeta (The Merry Widow), and Alfieri in the Met’s premiere of Bolcom’s A View from the Bridge; he returns as Don Pasquale this season. Other opera houses where he has appeared include Lyric Opera of Chicago; Seattle Opera; Houston Grand Opera; Los Angeles Opera; Washington National Opera; San Diego Opera; the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Paris Opera; the Aix-en-Provence Festival; Teatro Comunale Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste; the Cologne Opera; and Deutsche Oper am Rhein, among many others.
