Gerd Grochowski

German bass-baritone Gerd Grochowski made his San Francisco Opera debut as Jaroslav Prus in 2010’s The Makropulos Case, a role he has also performed at Stuttgart State Opera. His most recent Company appearances were as Donner and Gunther in the 2011 Ring cycle; he sings Gunther at Milan’s La Scala and in Berlin next year. Career highlights include Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde) at Milan’s La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera and Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam; Scarpia (Tosca) and Orest (Elektra) at Bavarian State Opera in Munich; Šiškov (From the House of the Dead) at the Aix-en-Provence Festival and in Vienna; Orest at Netherlands Opera; Kurwenal and Don Pizarro (Fidelio) at Berlin State Opera; the title role of Busoni’s Doktor Faust in Stuttgart; Don Pizarro in Hamburg and Vienna; and Telramund with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden and Berlin State Opera. Recent engagements include Dr. Schön and Jack the Ripper (Lulu) at Madrid’s Teatro Real, Telramund at Berlin State Opera and in Tokyo, and Orest at Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. Grochowski’s upcoming engagements include Wotan/the Wanderer in the Ring cycle in Linz and Klingsor in Munich.
