Rising 26 year-old German mezzo-soprano Christel Lötzsch makes her U.S. Operatic debut at San Francisco Opera. She studied at the Hochschule für Franz Liszt in Weimar, Germany and since October 2010 at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatorio in Milan, Italy. She worked intensely with Dame Gwyneth Jones. During her studies she developed a wide repertoire including the Mozart roles Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Sesto (La Clemenza di Tito), Idamante (Idomeneo), and Dorabella (Così fan tutte). She is also known as a specialist in trouser roles, lauded for her Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos), Octavian (Der Rosenkavailer) and Romeo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi). In the summer of 2012 she made her debut in Italy as Zerlina in Don Giovanni, directed by Franco Zeffirelli at the Arena di Verona. Her future plans are Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia in the 2013-14 season at the Semperoper in Dresden, where she can also be heard as Cherubino and Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel.
