American mezzo-soprano Angela Brower makes her San Francisco Opera debut in a role she performed at Munich’s Bavarian State Opera, where she is an ensemble member. Her other roles with that company include Wellgunde (Ring cycle), Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), and Dorabella (Così fan tutte); in the current season she has appeared as Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) and Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel). On the concert stage she has been a soloist with the NDR Radio Symphony Orchestra, Florence’s Maggio Musicale Festival, and at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Recipient of the 2009 Munich Festival Prize, Brower is a former member of Bavarian State Opera’s young artist program, where she performed the roles of the Sandman (Hänsel und Gretel), Maffio Orsini (Lucrezia Borgia), Zaida (Il Turco in Italia), and the title role of La Cenerentola. Brower is a graduate of Arizona State University and studied at Indiana University; she was also a member of Glimmerglass Opera’s Young American Artists Program.
