Opera Junior

Adapting a major work to perfectly fit a young cast

In this exciting new program, students spend the first two weeks studying a classic opera, and the next 10 weeks making it their own. After being immersed in the world of the opera, students create an adaptation of the piece using the original music from the opera. They learn to gently finesse the story to suit the ages and skill levels of the performers, while maintaining the integrity and meaning of the original opera, which they then rehearse and perform. Students come away with knowledge of the original masterpiece, as well as a special sense of ownership that they carry—along with gorgeous melodies—through a lifetime.

This program is designed for 12 weeks of weekly sessions, each lasting 75 minutes. A suitable performance space/multi-purpose room is required. The artist will work with the students and collaborate with the classroom teacher or project director who will help with weekly assignments in the artist’s absence. The program culminates in a performance of the opera!

Opera Junior is available to grades 4-12 and for a group of 20-60 students.

This program is available September 30, 2013 - May 30, 2014.

There is a $1,200 participation fee for this program. Financial aid is available for qualifying schools.
