In this unique in-school residency program, students study a classic opera and make it their own. Teaching artists coach students in adapting libretto and score to individual abilities while maintaining the integrity and meaning of the original work. Students design the production and rehearse and perform a finished piece for classmates, imparting a deep experience of the magic of opera to the entire school community.
SPACE AND TIME
Ten weekly class sessions of 90 minutes, a performance and a 45-minute follow-up meeting with each class. A team of two teaching artists plans content with the classroom teacher and guides the project during classes filled with active, hands-on learning. Teachers work with students to complete additional assignments between visits. Access to performance space and a piano in good working order is necessary.
September 29, 2014 - May 22, 2015.
$1,200 for each participating classroom. Financial aid is available for qualifying schools.
