Exploration Workshop: All About Carmen!

San Francisco Opera invites you to learn more about Carmen for Families in preparation for seeing the opera! 

Sunday, November 27 at 11am-12pm or 12:30-1:30pm

Ages 10 and older recommended.  Children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
 
Snacks will be served after each workshop. 
 
Experience Bizet’s masterpiece in an interactive, multi-generational workshop based on the themes, story, characters and music of Carmen.  Rachel Henneberry, Stage Manager for Carmen, will lead us in dynamic and engaging activities that will transport us to the world of this dramatic tale.  We'll learn about the characters by moving like them to music from the opera.  And we'll reenact a staging rehearsal, taking on all the roles from the props master to Carmen!

How do I order tickets? 
Order tickets here, or by calling the Opera Box Office at (415) 864-3330, or by visiting the Box Office at 301 Van Ness Avenue.  Box Office hours are Monday 10 am-5 pm, Tuesday-Saturday 10 am-6 pm.

What is the minimum age for attendance at the workshop?
Carmen for Families is recommended for ages 10 and up due to the mature nature of the characters and story.  Therefore, this workshop is also recommended for children ages 10 and up, accompanied by a parent.

What is the format of the workshop?
The workshop will be interactive. We aim to learn about opera by taking part in the creative process ourselves. Presentations will take the form of lively discussions and activities rather than lectures.

Where will the workshop be held and how do I get there?
The workshops on November 27 will be held in the Chorissima Room at the San Francisco Girls Chorus Building, 44 Page Street between Gough and Franklin Streets.  The workshops on December 4 will be held in the Chorus Room on the fifth floor of War Memorial Opera House.  Enter the Opera House through the North Stage Door, which is at the corner of Fulton and Franklin Streets. The workshops will begin promptly at the times listed above. The doors will open a half-hour before each start time.

Will refreshments be served?
Yes, beverages and light snacks like cookies will be served after each workshop. If you would like something more substantial you are welcome to bring your own food.

Can I bring my own food?
Yes, you can bring your own food. Keep in mind that we will not have formal breaks scheduled during the workshops, so you may want to come early if you plan to eat. The doors will open a half hour before each start time. If you prefer to eat beforehand, you can find a list of local restaurants at sfopera.com/restaurants
