San Francisco Opera’s 2014–15 Season-opening weekend continues with the 41st San Francisco Chronicle Presents Opera in the Park free outdoor concert in Golden Gate Park’s Sharon Meadow on Sunday, September 7 at 1:30 p.m. The concert celebrates the opening of San Francisco Opera’s 92nd Season and features internationally acclaimed artists from the Company’s Fall Season performing favorite duets and arias by Bellini, Puccini, Verdi, and more accompanied by the San Francisco Opera Orchestra led by Music Director Nicola Luisotti.

This year’s illustrious roster of Opera in the Park artists (to date) includes tenor Marco Berti, who stars in the Company’s season-opening production of Bellini’s Norma; soprano Patricia Racette and tenor Brandon Jovanovich, stars of the Company premiere of Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah; sopranos Julianna Di Giacomo and Heidi Stober, mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, tenor Ramón Vargas, and baritones Thomas Hampson and Brian Mulligan, from the cast of Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball); tenor Brian Jagde, from Tosca; and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn, who appears in several productions this season. David Gockley, General Director of San Francisco Opera, serves as master of ceremonies, and Classical KDFC Radio personality Dianne Nicolini hosts the concert.
Established by former San Francisco Opera General Director Kurt Herbert Adler in 1971, the annual Opera in the Park free concert is a beloved Bay Area tradition drawing thousands of music lovers each year, many of whom enjoy the occasion with elaborate picnics on the lawn. Crowds of up to 20,000 have come to the park every September to see the stars of the current San Francisco Opera season perform al fresco. Opera legends from Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo to Beverly Sills and Marilyn Horne have performed at Opera in the Park.
This event is free; no tickets are required. Bring a picnic and enjoy this outdoor concert; food and beverages will also be available for sale at the event. Taking public transit is highly recommended, and free bicycle valet parking will be provided by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. Artists and program are subject to change.
