San Francisco Opera holds auditions on October 3, 2012 for world premiere production of The Secret Garden
Seeking young performers for leading roles

SAN FRANCISCO (September 13, 2012)—San Francisco Opera announces auditions for young performers ages 9–21 to be considered for three leading roles in the world-premiere production of The Secret Garden by American composer Nolan Gasser and librettist Carey Harrison. The audition will be for the roles of Mary Lennox, a girl soprano between the ages of 9–21; Colin Craven, a boy tenor between the ages of 12–16; and Dickon Sowerby, a boy tenor between the ages of 14–21. Applicants for the role of Mary Lennox should appear around the age of 9 years old. Applicants for the role of Colin Craven and Dickon Sowerby must have a male tenor range.
Auditions will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 3 p.m. at the War Memorial Opera House (301 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco). Rehearsals begin February 4, 2013; performance dates are March 1, 2, 3 (matinee), 9 and 10 (matinee), 2013. All performances take place at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley, CA.
All roles require strong singing and acting abilities, and candidates should have past performance experience. These roles come with an AGMA Principal contract with a minimum weekly salary.  Selected artists will be required to join the American Guild of Musical Artists and pay initiation fees and dues.  Principal artists are notified of their daily rehearsal schedule the evening prior to their next day of work and are required to remain available the entire period, which generally take place between the hours of 10 a.m. and 11 p.m., six days a week.  San Francisco Opera adheres to all California laws governing the employment of minors in the entertainment industry.

Based on the beloved classic of children’s literature by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden by Bay Area composer Nolan Gasser and librettist Carey Harrison receives its world premiere in March 2013. A unique opportunity for young people to see this familiar story come to life as a fully staged opera, this work is intended for children and families of all ages and will feature discounted ticket prices for children under age 18. Commissioned by San Francisco Opera and presented in partnership with Cal Performances, The Secret Garden will be performed at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley.
