Shawn Mathey Makes San Francisco Opera Debut as Don Ottavio
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 11, 2011)—American tenor Shawn Mathey will replace Topi Lehtipuu as Don Ottavio in San Francisco Opera’s new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, opening Saturday, October 15, 2011. Topi Lehtipuu has withdrawn from this production due to illness. Shawn Mathey makes his San Francisco Opera debut with these performances in a role he has previously performed with Washington National Opera, Frankfurt Opera, Paris Opera, Zurich Opera, Royal Swedish Opera and The Cleveland Orchestra. In 2007 he made his debut with the San Francisco Symphony in Berlioz’s Lelio and later returned as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah.

Career highlights include Tamino at the Paris Opera; Beppe (Pagliacci) at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Lysander with Lyric Opera of Chicago; Pylade (Iphigénie en Tauride) with Washington National Opera; Tamino with Munich’s Bavarian State Opera; Tamino, Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Tom Rakewell (The Rake’s Progress), Golo (Schumann’s Genoveva, available on DVD), Ferrando, Belfiore (La Finta Giardiniera), and the title role of La Clemenza di Tito in Zurich; the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) with Houston Grand Opera; and Ferrando at the Salzburg and Aix-en-Provence Festivals and in Munich, Vienna, and Paris. The tenor is a frequent guest at Frankfurt Opera, where he has sung Ferrando, Tamino, Belmonte, the Painter (Lulu), Lurcanio (Ariodante), Kudrjáš (Káťa Kabanová), and Fenton (Falstaff).
San Francisco Opera presents Mozart’s Don Giovanni in a new production premiere at the War Memorial Opera House. Opening on Saturday, October 15 with eight subsequent performances through November 10, Mozart’s exhilarating comic drama features an exciting cast of singers, including Lucas Meachem, Ellie Dehn, Serena Farnocchia, Kate Lindsey, Shawn Mathey and Marco Vinco. Music Director Nicola Luisotti conducts the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus, and Italian film and theater director Gabriele Lavia directs this new San Francisco Opera production with sets designed by Alessandro Camera and costumes by Andrea Viotti.
