SAN FRANCISCO (July 22, 2011)––San Francisco Opera opens its 2011–12 Season on Friday, September 9 at the historic War Memorial Opera House with Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot, featuring Swedish soprano Iréne Theorin in the title role withItalian tenor Marco Berti (Calaf) and current Adler Fellow Leah Crocetto (Liù). Music Director Nicola Luisotti conducts the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus in a dazzling production designed by David Hockney. A highlight of the City’s fall cultural season, San Francisco Opera’s opening-night festivities include San Francisco Opera Guild’s Opera Ball 2011 and BRAVO! CLUB’s Opening Night Gala.

San Francisco Opera Guild kicks off the San Francisco philanthropic season on Friday, September 9 with Opera Ball 2011An Evening in the Forbidden City, co-chaired by Anne Marie Massocca and Susan Tamagni. Hailed as one of the City’s most glamorous cultural events, Opera Ball raises funds for San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Opera Guild’s education programs while treating guests to an exceptional evening of food, beverages and world-class entertainment. The event begins at 5 p.m. with an elegant cocktail reception in the War Memorial Opera House, followed by a sumptuous dinner at 6 p.m., created by renowned chef Lucas Schoemaker of McCall Associates, in the Opera Ball Pavilion. After dinner, guests will enjoy the season-opening performance of Puccini’s Turandot at the War Memorial Opera House at 8 p.m. The evening culminates with desserts and dancing under the Opera Ball Pavilion to live musical entertainment by the Bill Hopkins Rock’n Orchestra. This entire evening will be designed by leading San Francisco event architect Robert Fountain.

BRAVO! CLUB’s Opening Night Gala / Friday, September 9
BRAVO! CLUB, San Francisco Opera's group of young professionals dedicated to building a new audience for opera, presents its 20th anniversary opening night gala on Friday, September 9, co-chaired by Ileana Facchini and Kelly Krueger. BRAVO! CLUB begins the evening at 5 p.m. with a pre-performance cocktail reception. Dinner will commence at 6 p.m. under the San Francisco City Hall rotunda, featuring a menu of elegant California cuisine created by Melons Catering and paired with local wines. After dinner, guests will enjoy San Francisco Opera’s performance of Puccini's masterpiece Turandot at the War Memorial Opera House. The evening concludes back at City Hall with dancing to DJ Dojah, with delectable desserts and savories by Melons Catering.

Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot/ Friday, September 9
San Francisco Opera’s 2011–12 Season opens with Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot, the passionate tale of a princess whose cruelty only masks her fear of love. Puccini’s final work features some of the composer’s most glorious music, including the stirring anthem “Nessun dorma.” The outstanding cast is led by Swedish soprano Iréne Theorin, “the world’s reigning Turandot” (Opera Britannia), in her Company debut; Adler Fellow Leah Crocetto, an “outlandishly gifted soprano” (San Francisco Chronicle); and Marco Berti, “one of the preeminent Italian singers of his generation” (MusicalCriticism.com). The striking San Francisco Opera/Lyric Opera of Chicago co-production, featuring David Hockney’s vibrant sets and directed by Garnett Bruce, returns in November with an equally impressive ensemble led by American dramatic soprano Susan Foster and Italian tenor Walter Fraccaro.

Tickets for BRAVO! CLUB’S Opening Night Gala, which include performance tickets, are priced from $375 to $500 and may be purchased at sfopera.com/bravo. A BRAVO! CLUB membership fee of $60 is required to attend the Opening Night Gala.
