SAN FRANCISCO (January 31, 2012)—San Francisco Opera’s Education Department presents FREE family screenings of Giacomo Puccini’s The Girl of the Golden West — The Movie! on Saturday, February 25 at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 P.M. and Sunday, February 26 at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco.
 
 Created from San Francisco Opera's new production of The Girl of the Golden West in 2010, this one-hour movie is the perfect way for families to enjoy the magic of the opera. San Francisco Opera’s Education Department produced this movie version for Bay Area school and community programs. Screenings are free, however advance ticket registration is requested at sfopera.com/girlmovie.  Family resource materials, including story synopsis, biographies, slideshows of production photos, and audio and video examples are available at sfopera.com/girlresources.
 
This abridged version of Puccini’s classic western opera stars soprano Deborah Voigt as Minnie, the tender hearted frontier woman who falls for the crafty criminal Dick Johnson (Salvatore Licitra), much to the dismay of the suspicious town sheriff Jack Rance (Roberto Frontali). The dramatic love triangle set in Gold Rush–era California is complete with a Wild-West saloon, a high-stakes poker game, and a Wells Fargo agent. Performed in Italian with English subtitles, The Girl of the Golden West — The Movie!  is recommended for ages 8 and up and features a live introduction.
