Created from San Francisco Opera's The Magic Flute for Families in 2007, this one-hour movie is a perfect way for children to learn about the magic of the opera. San Francisco Opera’s Education department produced this movie version for Bay Area school and community programs. Family resource materials, such as a story synopsis, biographies, slideshows of design drawings and production photos, coloring book images and audio and video examples are available at sfopera.com/edmaterials.
In this abridged version of Mozart’s whimsical tale, the bird-catcher Papageno (Daniel Belcher) narrates the plot between arias in a fun, family-friendly format. Papageno accompanies the prince Tamino (Chad Freeburg) on a journey through an enchanted world to free his beloved Pamina, sung by former San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow Ji Young Yang. Along the way, they find their true loves and discover the virtues of wisdom and forgiveness. The cast also includes Svetlana Nikitenko as the Queen of the Night and former Adler Fellow Jeremy Galyon as Sarastro. The mystical realms of the opera are re-envisioned by renowned cartoonist and designer Gerald Scarfe.
