Created from San Francisco Opera's The Elixir of Love for Families
production in 2008, this one-hour movie is a perfect way for children to learn about the magic of the opera. San Francisco Opera’s Education Department produced this movie version for Bay Area school and community programs. Previous screenings of San Francisco Opera Education’s first opera movie, The Magic Flute for Families—The Movie!
, have been very well received and large crowds are expected once again for this free family presentation. Family resource materials, such as a story synopsis, biographies, slide shows, individual and group project ideas, and audio and video examples are available at sfopera.com/edmaterials
This whimsical production of Donizetti’s opera, directed by Jose Maria Condemi, takes place in the delightful setting of a Napa Valley county fair in 1915 complete with leatherhead football players and a Model-T truck. Using a translation by Donald Pippen, this production will be sung in English with English supertitles. The tale of shy Nemorino winning the heart of the beautiful Adina—with the help of a "love potion"—is a celebration of innocence and love in a simpler time.
In a showcase of San Francisco Opera Center talent, the young, energetic cast of The Elixir of Love for Families is entirely comprised of former Adler Fellows. Tenor Alek Shrader stars as the bashful, love-struck Nemorino opposite soprano Ji Young Yang, the beautiful yet coy Adina—the object of Nemorino’s affection. Baritone Eugene Brancoveanu is the dashing Sergeant Belcore and the rest of the cast includes baritone Dale Travis as Dulcamara, the quack doctor and travelling salesman who sells Nemorino his magic elixir, and soprano Nikki Einfeld as Adina’s friend and chatty town gossip, Giannetta. Assistant Music Director Giuseppe Finzi conducts.
